Microsoft Clarity launched the AI Visibility dashboard in early 2026. On kaspianfuad.com, it showed me 34 citations in 7 days I had no other way to detect, with a 33.01% share of authority on agentic storefronts shopify queries. Most Shopify merchants do not have it installed. Of those that do, most do not know how to read it.
TL;DR: Microsoft Clarity AI Visibility is the only free dashboard that shows how often AI shopping agents cite your Shopify store. Install Clarity (5 min), wait 7 to 14 days for data, then read 4 panels: Citations, Share of Authority, Grounding queries, My cited pages. Use it as the measurement layer after every schema, GTIN, or robots.txt fix.
Why this matters for your Shopify store
- AI shopping agents cite stores invisibly: no GA4 referrer, no Search Console entry, no DNS query log shows it
- Without measurement, every fix I covered in the agentic storefronts guide is a black box. Clarity AI Visibility is the closest thing to ground truth in 2026
- The dashboard is free, beta, and unmonetized: it is genuinely the simplest install in the agentic measurement stack
How to install Clarity on a Shopify store in under 5 minutes
Three steps.
- Sign up free at clarity.microsoft.com. Create a project, name it after your store, paste the storefront URL.
- Copy the tracking script. Microsoft generates a
<script>block tied to your project ID. - Paste into Shopify theme.liquid. Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit code > Layout >
theme.liquid. Paste the Clarity script immediately before</head>. Save.
Data starts populating within 30 minutes for sessions. The AI Visibility (Beta) tab appears in the dashboard sidebar after 7 to 14 days of data collection on a store with meaningful traffic.
Stores below roughly 500 sessions per week may see the AI Visibility tab as empty for a longer period: Microsoft’s data source needs a minimum citation volume to enable per-domain reporting. If your store is below that traffic floor, focus on content authority (blog posts that answer real shopping queries) before expecting visible citations.
What the 4 panels actually measure
The AI Visibility dashboard has four primary panels. Each tells you something different about how the engine sees your store.
Citations
A raw count of how many times an AI engine cited any URL from your domain during the time window (default last 7 days). A citation is when the agent included one of your URLs in its grounding sources for a user query. Use this number to track the absolute volume trend, not as a quality signal on its own. On kaspianfuad.com the count fluctuates daily between 0 and 8, averaging around 5 per day in mid-2026.
Share of Authority (SoA)
The percentage of total citations across all competing domains that came from yours, for the time window or a filtered query. The most useful single metric in the dashboard. If your domain pulled 5 of 20 total citations for a given query, your SoA is 25%. Anything above 20 percent indicates dominant authority on that query; below 5 percent indicates competitors are winning. Whole-domain SoA averages flatten the signal; always filter to specific queries to read this correctly.
Grounding queries
A list of the actual user queries that triggered citations involving your domain. This is the closest thing to a search-intent feed for AI-driven discovery. Filter by SoA descending to see which queries you dominate. Filter by Citations descending to see which queries drive the most reach. The intersection of high SoA AND high citation count is your defensible territory.
My cited pages
URLs from your domain that received the citations, ranked by citation count. The key metric to watch after publishing new content or fixing schema. If your top cited pages are all blog URLs and zero product URLs, your catalog layer is the next blocker. That is the exact pattern the product schema errors and GTIN coverage posts cover.
How to read Share of Authority correctly
Three traps to avoid.
Whole-domain SoA is noise. The metric Microsoft surfaces by default is your share of all citations across all queries for the period. This averages dominant queries (high SoA) with peripheral ones (low SoA) into a number that means little. Always filter to a specific query group before reading.
Low total volume inflates percentages. A query with 4 total citations across all domains, where you provided 1, shows as 25% SoA. That sounds great but reflects a near-zero-traffic query. Cross-reference total citation count when interpreting SoA: above 20 percent on a query with 20+ citations is meaningful; the same percentage on a 4-citation query is statistical noise.
SoA is not market share. AI engines surface only a handful of citations per query (typically 3 to 7). High SoA means you are in the top-cited group; it does not mean you have captured most of the search demand. The downstream traffic metric is the AI referral traffic panel, which is currently under 1 percent for most stores in 2026 because users complete decisions in the chat interface.
How to identify what’s working (and what’s not)
Three patterns I look for when reviewing a store’s AI Visibility data weekly.
Pattern 1: blog citations dominate, zero product citations. The store is winning on content authority but losing on catalog. Run the GTIN coverage audit and product schema errors fix, then re-check in 2 to 3 weeks.
Pattern 2: zero citations across the board. Either the store has too little traffic for Microsoft to report (under ~500 sessions/week), or AI bots cannot reach the storefront. Run the curl tests in Shopify robots.txt for AI crawlers to rule out the bot reachability problem.
Pattern 3: citations climbing, AI referral traffic flat. Normal in 2026. Engines surface citations without forcing click-through. The leading indicator is citation count and SoA; downstream conversion to actual visits is a follow-on metric that lags by 6 to 12 months as engine UX evolves.
How to verify your Clarity install is collecting AI Visibility data
Three checks, 5 minutes total.
- View source on your homepage. Grep for
clarity.msin the HTML. If the script tag is present and not wrapped in a commented block, install is correct. - Real-time panel in Clarity. Open Clarity dashboard, switch to Real-time. Open your storefront in a separate browser, click around 3 to 5 pages. Within 60 seconds, your session should appear in Real-time. Confirms the script is firing.
- AI Visibility (Beta) tab. Should appear in the Clarity left sidebar within 7 to 14 days for stores with traffic above the reporting threshold. If it does not appear after 30 days, check Microsoft Clarity status page or open a support ticket; do not assume your data is wrong.
If you want the broader operational playbook the AI Visibility dashboard fits into, see the Shopify agentic storefronts guide for strategy and the enable agentic storefronts walkthrough for Shopify-side setup.
What Clarity AI Visibility does not show
Two real gaps you should plan around.
- Single-engine data source. As of 2026, Clarity AI Visibility reports primarily Microsoft Copilot citation data, with partner engine integration rolling out through the year. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude citations are not directly visible here. The signal is directional, not complete.
- No click-through attribution per query. AI referral traffic shows total AI-driven sessions but does not break down which specific queries drove them. To attribute a session to a specific cited query, you would need UTM tagging in your URLs and luck (engines rarely preserve UTMs in citation links).
For full multi-engine tracking, the paid tools mentioned in my agentic storefronts product data scraping post cover the gap, but Clarity is the free baseline every Shopify store should run regardless.
Install Clarity this week. Two weeks from now, the AI Visibility tab will show you what your fixes are actually moving.
The takeaway
- Install Clarity in 5 minutes; AI Visibility data appears within 7 to 14 days on traffic-bearing stores
- Read Share of Authority by filtered query, never whole-domain average
- Cross-reference SoA with total citation count to filter signal from low-volume noise
- After every schema, GTIN, or robots.txt fix, check My cited pages in 2 to 3 weeks
- Treat AI referral traffic under 1% as normal in 2026; citation count is the leading indicator
